MetaMask is one of the most common and widely used crypto wallets. Built purely for browser-based activities, it is used to store and transact cryptocurrencies. Moreover, the use-case is further enhanced by the additional features including swapping & buying of cryptocurrencies like Ethereum, BAT coin etc.
In the early days, MetaMask was purely used to connect with the Ethereum network and ERC20 based projects. With time the wallet has gained the ability to connect with popular blockchains and allowed users to transact in their environment. As a beginner, it may be a little hard to understand the know-how of the wallet and how one can add a blockchain network to MetaMask.
MetaMask wallet is a FREE to use application
Therefore, in this tutorial, I will show you how Metamask can be connected with any blockchain network automatically without much effort using a step-by-step process –
How to add MetaMask to your Browser?
Adding Metamask to your browser is the first step toward using the crypto wallet. Users have to visit the official website and download the wallet on their preferred browser.
The wallet will be added as an extension on your browser
Setting up the wallet:
Once installed, the user has to setup the wallet by following the steps provided. One of the most important steps when setting up Metamask or infact any other crypto wallet (like Ledger Nano S) is remembering the seed phrase.
MetaMask will provide you with an option to generate your own seed phrase which as a wallet user is your responsibility to save and store in a secure location. It is used to recover the wallet if your browser crashes or you change the device.
Write down your seed phrase on a piece of paper and save it. Never save it on your device
After saving the seed phrase, the user has to choose the login password and Voila! the wallet setup is complete. You’re all set to access all features of the wallet.
How to add Blockchain Network to MetaMask?
By default, MetaMask will connect to the Ethereum Network and if you wish to connect to another application built on another network like Avalanche (AVAX coin) or Binance Smart Chain, you have to switch to the other network.
1. Adding a new Network:
Adding a new blockchain network to MetaMask is a very simple & straightforward process. Users will have to visit the Chainlist website and connect to the MetaMask wallet.
What is Chainlist?
Chainlist is a platform that contains a list of EVM (Ethereum Virtual Machine) networks. Users can pick and choose the network of their choice & add it to their wallet.
2. Connect the Wallet:
Once the wallet is connected, just choose the blockchain network you wish to add to your MetaMask wallet and in a matter of seconds, it will be done.
Remember to turn-off the option of Testnet on Chainlist before adding any network on MetaMask
3. Switching the network:
Whenever you wish to connect to a new DAPP or Protocol built on a different chain, just switch the network of your wallet and you’re all set to access the application.
